My two daughters have attended SBCS for several years. I'm so proud of them in their efforts and I appreciate the cultural, written and verbal education they are receiving. I need to express a note of sadness as a parent who is quite participatory in my daughters endeavors. I am not Chinese although my wife is. I am African and do not speak nor understand any Chinese dialects. I am however, always in attendants for my daughters conference whether they be at SBCS, PVIS or Penn High where they both attend. Regrettably, at the conference dated Saturday, February 7, 2009, I felt embarrassed and decided to leave the room within ten minutes of signing-in. The undertone of exclusivity felt apparent when no attempt was made to speak in English. As a more broadened approach to such Conferences, perhaps minimum effort of inclusion to participating and paying parents could be present. Many parents may not understand Mandarin, but rather Cantonese, such as my wife, but still want to be addressed with their child's progress. Thank you. |
